2020 Food System Summit

Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, Auditorium, 602 Duncan Drive Auburn University AL, 36849

The 2020 Alabama Food System Summit will bring together stakeholders within Alabama’s food system to establish a course of action for a sustainable system for all in Alabama. Our Keynote speaker will be Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner, Ryan Quarles, who will share information about the Kentucky Hunger Initiative, which supports the health and economic well-being of Kentucky citizens through a sustainable regional food system. Commissioner Quarles has worked to ensure coordination between a variety of sectors within the food system, including producers, buyers, aggregators and policy makers.

2020 Alabama Food System Summit Goal

Lower Alabama food insecurity rates while being fiscally sustainable by increasing opportunities for those in need to receive food, such as food prescriptions, policies around food donations or farmers market/SNAP dollar matching programs

Objectives

  • Convene stakeholders who are interested in pursuing collective action from a variety of sectors within the food system, including producers, buyers, aggregators and policy makers
  • Identify the existing barriers that hinder food security initiatives at all levels (producers, aggregators, buyers, policy makers)
  • Locate and engage potential supporters and other resources that could be leveraged to help food system projects, policies and programs to reach their potentials
  • Consider potential approaches to enable and sustain collective action, to learn from our experiences and to adjust course accordingly
