Forest Principles, Practices, and Stewardship for Landowners

Mary Olive Thomas Demonstration Forest, Moores Mill Rd Auburn AL, 36830

This 6-week online course teaches forestry basics for landowners who want to start being more proactive with their forestland management. Land management professionals will present information on topics such as determining the best forest type for your property, locating boundary lines and map reading, forest tree measurements, forest thinning for timber and wildlife, and forest product markets. Learn at your own pace with the course wrapping up with an optional forestry field day where you can further your knowledge with hands-on activities and interact with forestry professionals and other landowners.

The course fee is $60.00 + tax and includes a notebook, course materials, and snacks, lunch, and activities during the field day.

2020 Food System Summit

The 2020 Alabama Food System Summit will bring together stakeholders within Alabama’s food system to establish a course of action for a sustainable system for all in Alabama. Our Keynote speaker will be Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner, Ryan Quarles, who will share information about the Kentucky Hunger Initiative, which supports the health and economic well-being of Kentucky citizens through a sustainable regional food system. Commissioner Quarles has worked to ensure coordination between a variety of sectors within the food system, including producers, buyers, aggregators and policy makers.

2020 Alabama Food System Summit Goal

Lower Alabama food insecurity rates while being fiscally sustainable by increasing opportunities for those in need to receive food, such as food prescriptions, policies around food donations or farmers market/SNAP dollar matching programs

Objectives

  • Convene stakeholders who are interested in pursuing collective action from a variety of sectors within the food system, including producers, buyers, aggregators and policy makers
  • Identify the existing barriers that hinder food security initiatives at all levels (producers, aggregators, buyers, policy makers)
  • Locate and engage potential supporters and other resources that could be leveraged to help food system projects, policies and programs to reach their potentials
  • Consider potential approaches to enable and sustain collective action, to learn from our experiences and to adjust course accordingly

Stream Restoration Inspection and Maintenance Workshop

This 1-day workshop will introduce participants to proper inspection and maintenance practices for urban stream restoration projects. Workshop will include classroom and field learning events, with the opportunity for stream restoration site visits in Auburn, Lanett, and Valley, Alabama. Dr. Greg Jennings, PE, Jennings Environmental, PLLC, will provide presentations and field tours of local stream restoration projects. An overview will be provided for urban stream restoration, including a discussion on preventing streambank erosion, maintaining in-stream structures, managing and maintaining riparian vegetation, stormwater outfalls and building in maintenance into existing management systems. Limited to first 30 registrants.

Participants will gain an understanding of key features of restoration projects to be inspected and maintained, and the frequency at which projects should be assessed.

Alabama Private Training Course in Region 2

These classes are designed for the farmers who need to take the private pesticide applicator test in order to purchase restricted use products. However, we will be discussing chemical safety and sprayer calibration at this class, so anyone who sprays pesticides on a large scale will benefit from this training even if a restricted pesticide license is not needed. If you would like to attend any of these classes call the Extension Office of the County you want to attend and make your reservation as seating is limited in some locations. A fee of $20 will be charged for this training and testing. An additional licensing fee of $25 will be sent to the Department of Agriculture and Industries by the applicant. The licensing fee is not included in the training and testing fee. Please plan to pay with a check (checks are preferred) made out the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) in the amount of $20 or with the correct cash amount.
