Alabama Master Naturalist – Gulf Field Day

Join the Alabama Master Naturalist program for a fun and informative field day at Gulf State Park. Alabama Extension has partnered with Alabama State Parks naturalists to provide a day showcasing what makes this part of the state special. Content will include interpretive hikes and opportunities to learn about the history, habitats, plants, and animals of the area.

Please dress appropriately for outdoor activities given the weather conditions. Close-toed shoes that can get muddy should be worn. With this being a full day program that is mostly outdoors, a change of clothes after the programming has concluded is encouraged. Bring bug spray and sunscreen if needed. Also, bring water and a packed lunch. Binoculars will be beneficial, but are certainly not required.

The $15 fee helps cover the cost of this programming. If you decide to enroll in the full Alabama Master Naturalist course, the cost of this event will be deducted from the total price.

The monthly AUWRC Water Webinar series continues with Multi-Faceted “Mudbugs”: How Ecology, Hydrogeology, and Geomorphology Influence Burrowing Crayfish Biodiversity in Alabama’s Black Belt Prairie featuring Rebecca Bearden. Bearden is a biologist with the Geological Survey of Alabama researching restoration opportunities for watersheds harboring aquatic species of concern. She also manages social media relations for the Alabama Rivers and Streams Network, and is currently an outdoors columnist for Southeast Farm Press. She works part-time on my family’s cattle ranch in Maplesville, Alabama. Bearden graduated from Auburn University in 2007 with B.S. degrees in Agricultural Communications and Wildlife Sciences. She is currently a PhD candidate in Biology at the University of Alabama where her dissertation focuses on burrowing crayfish habitat and behavior in the Black Belt Prairie of Alabama.

Grant Writing Basics

Continuing Education: 0.7 (7 hours) CEUs

This one-day grant writing workshop, led by Kimberly Richardson Consulting, will cover researching grants, request for proposal selection, project narrative development, budget creation, program cultivation, partnership development, and long term success planning. It includes handouts, resource materials, and small group exercises.

This workshop is intended for anyone interested in learning about the basics of grant writing, including environmental groups, watershed groups, nonprofits, or small organizations hoping to find funding for special projects. Knowledge in this workshop will be transferable to other types of grant applications.

The workshop is part of the Alabama Watershed Stewards Program which funded via a Clean Water Act 319(h) grant from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management Non-Point Source Unit and EPA Region 4.

Power of Produce (POP) at the Farmers Markets

The Power of Produce (POP) program is held on Saturday mornings May until October at the Festhalle and Berlin Farmers Markets from 8 AM – Noon. Children (under 13) are encouraged to enjoy a small snack made of local produce. As a reward, the child receives 2 POP Bucks to spend on fresh produce at a farmers booth in the market.

Participate in this FREE event, which encourages our youth to eat healthy and nutritious produce and supports our local farmers!
