Alabama Master Naturalist – Wind Creek Field Day

Join the Alabama Master Naturalist program for a fun and informative field day at Wind Creek State Park. Alabama Extension has partnered with Alabama State Parks naturalists to provide a day showcasing what makes this part of the state special. Content will include interpretive hikes and opportunities to learn about the history, habitats, plants, and animals of the area.

Please dress appropriately for outdoor activities given the weather conditions. Close-toed shoes that can get muddy should be worn. With this being a full day program that is mostly outdoors, a change of clothes after the programming has concluded is encouraged. Bring bug spray and sunscreen if needed. Also, bring water and a packed lunch. Binoculars will be beneficial, but are certainly not required.

The $15 fee helps cover the cost of this programming. If you decide to enroll in the full Alabama Master Naturalist course, the cost of this event will be deducted from the total price.

The program will culminate with each business preparing a working budget, marketing strategy and business plan in hopes of being awarded one of the multiple $1000 grants and additional business support services provided by BCI and our partners.

Alabama Private Training Course in Region 4

These classes are designed for the farmers who need to take the private pesticide applicator test in order to purchase restricted use products. However, we will be discussing chemical safety and sprayer calibration at this class, so anyone who sprays pesticides on a large scale will benefit from this training even if a restricted pesticide license is not needed. If you would like to attend any of these classes call the Extension Office of the County you want to attend and make your reservation as seating is limited in some locations. A fee of $20 will be charged for this training and testing. An additional licensing fee of $25 will be sent to the Department of Agriculture and Industries by the applicant. The licensing fee is not included in the training and testing fee. Please plan to pay with a check (checks are preferred) made out the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) in the amount of $20 or with the correct cash amount. Well owners in Mobile and Baldwin counties are invited to attend the Coastal Well Owner Webinar. This webinar will discuss an opportunity to enroll in a free well water testing program offered by Ann Ojeda at Auburn University. This research endeavor is in partnership with the Alabama Extension Based – Alabama Private Well Program (APWP).
Registration is required to attend a webinar. People only need to attend one webinar to learn about the research experience and well water testing opportunity. Ojeda has partnered with the APWP to recruit well owners to participate in a two-year, citizen-science opportunity where well owners can receive free well water testing kits and conduct water quality monitoring of their drinking water.

Rain gardens are a part of stormwater management systems that can be both beautiful and functional. They are shallow, vegetated landscape depressions that slow water for a short time to provide stormwater infiltration, pollutant filtration, native plant habitat, and effective stormwater treatment for small-scale residential or commercial drainage areas. In this workshop you will learn the basics of rain garden site assessment and design, and will help the Crump Senior Center design their own rain garden.

Woods In Your Backyard is designed with the small landowner in mind. This two-part workshop will help you to effectively care for forests and wildlife. It will increase your enjoyment of the land. It will help you to recognize and manage invasive plants & pests. It will identify potential income sources, and help you understand how your land relates to the land around you. Owners of even just a few acres can make a positive difference in their environment through planning and implementing the simple stewardship practices you will learn at The Woods In Your Backyard Workshop. Please contact the Bibb County Extension Office to register. The fee is $30/Individual and $45/couple and covers both classes.

2022 Alabama Goat and Sheep Summit

ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY, ALA – Join Alabama Extension’s animal science team at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) for its second Alabama Goat and Sheep Summit on Saturday, September 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Winfred Thomas Agricultural Research Station, 372 Walker Lane in Hazel Green, Alabama.

Topics will include:

• Connecting to public and private funding sources
• Breeding and reproduction issues
• Managing parasites and other diseases among sheep and goats
• Using goats to control understory vegetation in forestland areas (research update)

The Alabama Goat and Sheep Summit will feature exciting activities and exhibits by partners and Alabama Extension staff, including a farm tour, the new Mobile STEM Lab, a petting zoo, and a hayride. It’s also a great time to network with other goat and sheep producers in the region.

Admission is free, but pre-registration is required to attend
