RETURNING PARTICIPANTS OLY: The Southeast Diabetes Faith Initiative (SDFI) helps participants achieve moderate weight loss by eating well and being active. SDFI is a yearlong program designed for people with prediabetes. It is also designed for people who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes and want to lower their risk.

Suggestions are offered on proofing your home from wildlife entry.

Recreational Pond Management Workshop

This event will provide a great opportunity for pond owners and managers to gain a better understanding of what it takes to properly construct, manage, and maintain a recreational pond. The indoor presentations and demonstrations will cover it all: construction, stocking, weed and wildlife control, and everything in between. The cost for participation is FREE but pre-registration is required because seating is limited. Registration includes a seat at the workshop, lunch, and printed presentation materials and related publications. Etowah County Tomato Taste Off

Join us for the second annual Etowah County Tomato Taste-Off Saturday, July 9
Entrants should bring their tomatoes to the event, and register from 8-9 a.m.
Entrants in the slicing tomato should bring one tomato, and cherry tomato entrants should bring five tomatoes of the same variety. Participants are limited to two entries each, and should only enter tomatoes they grew themselves. The heaviest tomato and best youth-grown tomato will be awarded separately from all category entries. The competition will be judged blind, and the tomatoes will be tasted raw, without any salt or other addition.
In addition to the contest, participants will enjoy unique Extension educational opportunities from 9-10 a.m. including presentations and information from the Etowah County Master Gardeners, SNAP-ED Nutrition Information, Food preservations, and Tomato Production, and more. The award ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m.

Venomous Snake Training for First Responders

This 8-hour workshop will focus on preparing first responders for interactions with venomous snakes. Training will include venomous snake ID, common non-native venomous snakes, general safety practices, handlingsecuring venomous snakes, first responder medicine and bite protocols, and hospital care expectations. This meeting is open to emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, firefighters, and police officers. Seating is limited and preregistration is required. This meeting is sponsored by Wiregrass RC&D and Pilcher Ambulance.
