STEM in the Garden Teacher Training Series

Alabama Extension Home Grounds Team knows that for a school’s outdoor classroom to be successful it must be grown and maintained correctly. The STEM in the Garden course will train teachers and outdoor classroom volunteers on basic gardening principles, ways to align the Alabama gardening calendar with your school year calendar, and solutions to common problems associated with outdoor classrooms. STEM in the Garden will strengthen your garden knowledge while maximizing your school garden’s STEM teaching capability. This course follows along with Clemson University’s outdoor classroom curriculum, ‘STEM in the Garden,’ which is recommended for purchase to accompany the class.

June 16- Building and Maintaining Raised Bed Gardens; Seed Starting for the Classroom

Workshop Description: Teachers and informal educators including 4-H Agents are invited to participate in this full day in-person training that will provide hands-on education about volunteer monitoring, water quality standards, and water pollution, and stream biomonitoring as presented in AWW’s curriculum, Exploring Our Living Streams Curriculum (EOLS).

The curriculum correlates to the Alabama Course of Study Standards for Science (Grades 4 and 6), Biology (Grades 9-12), Environmental Science (Grades 9-12), Life Science (Grade 7), and Earth Science (Grade 6).

During the workshop, educators will conduct stream biomonitoring on Fishing Creek in Pell City.

Certification as an Alabama Water Watch Stream BioMonitor
Copy of Exploring Our Living Streams: Stream Biomonitoring Curriculum

STEM in the Garden Teacher Training Workshop

Alabama Extension Home Grounds Team knows that for a school’s outdoor classroom to be successful it must be grown and maintained correctly. The STEM in the Garden course will train teachers and outdoor classroom volunteers on basic gardening principles, ways to align the Alabama gardening calendar with your school year calendar, and solutions to common problems associated with outdoor classrooms. STEM in the Garden will strengthen your garden knowledge while maximizing your school garden’s STEM teaching capability. This course follows along with Clemson University’s outdoor classroom curriculum, ‘STEM in the Garden,’ which is recommended for purchase to accompany the class.
Sessions include:
June 14: Soil and Plant nutrition; Organic vs. Conventional Growing Methods
June 16- Building and Maintaining Raised Bed Gardens; Seed Starting for the Classroom
June 21- Pollinator Gardening- Who they are and what plants attract them; Insects in the Garden: How to attract beneficials and eliminate pests
June 23- Basics of Growing Vegetables and Herbs; Edible Landscaping Ideas for Outdoor Classrooms
June 28- Rain Gardens and Rainwater Harvesting; Composting and Vermicomposting in Schools
June 30- 25 Landscape Tips for the Outdoor Classroom; Ornamental Ponds: Plants and Maintenance
CEUs are available with each session through the AAMU/UAH Regional Inservice Center.
