STEM in the Garden Teacher Training Workshop

Alabama Extension Home Grounds Team knows that for a school’s outdoor classroom to be successful it must be grown and maintained correctly. The STEM in the Garden course will train teachers and outdoor classroom volunteers on basic gardening principles, ways to align the Alabama gardening calendar with your school year calendar, and solutions to common problems associated with outdoor classrooms. STEM in the Garden will strengthen your garden knowledge while maximizing your school garden’s STEM teaching capability. This course follows along with Clemson University’s outdoor classroom curriculum, ‘STEM in the Garden,’ which is recommended for purchase to accompany the class.

June 14: Soil and Plant nutrition; Organic vs. Conventional Growing Methods
June 16- Building and Maintaining Raised Bed Gardens; Seed Starting for the Classroom
June 21- Pollinator Gardening- Who they are and what plants attract them; Insects in the Garden: How to attract beneficials and eliminate pests
June 23- Basics of Growing Vegetables and Herbs; Edible Landscaping Ideas for Outdoor Classrooms
June 28- Rain Gardens and Rainwater Harvesting; Composting and Vermicomposting in Schools

During this workshop, you will learn about resources available to you as a well owner and the importance of testing well water. The first 25 participants for each workshop will receive free well water testing kits!

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System – Alabama Private Well Program (APWP) is an educational resource available to private well owners throughout Alabama. We want to learn about your groundwater to better understand risks and develop resources to help you maintain your well water quality. Workshop attendees can speak directly with water researchers and APWP staff and learn about the water testing program.

The Bullock County Natural Resources Council is hosting a Natural Resources Tour & Fish Fry at Adam’s Angus Farm near Union Springs, AL. This tour will cover topics like Wild Pig Management, Pasture Management & Hay Feeding, Recreational Pond Management, Stream Crossings & Installation, and Sustainable Forest Management. A dinner will be provided by sponsors for all registered attendees. Preregistration is required by 6/17/2022 by contacting the Bullock County Extension Office (334-738-2580).

Power of Produce (POP) at the Farmers Markets

The Power of Produce (POP) program is held on Saturday mornings May until October at the Festhalle and Berlin Farmers Markets from 8 AM – Noon. Children (under 13) are encouraged to enjoy a small snack made of local produce. As a reward, the child receives 2 POP Bucks to spend on fresh produce at a farmers booth in the market.

Participate in this FREE event, which encourages our youth to eat healthy and nutritious produce and supports our local farmers!
