For Tallapoosa County 4-H members, ages 9-18. This is a beginner kayaking class. We will take a 2-mile float trip down Sandy Creek in Dadeville after having a safety and instructional lesson. Participants will sign up for either the morning session (Session 1) or the afternoon session (Session 2). The cost is $10 and that includes lunch. prescribed burn. Up to twenty participants will be
accepted and assigned to crews. Each crew will be led by experienced, Alabama Certified Prescribed Burn
Managers. Participants will have access all day to
observe, ask questions, and gain EXPERIENCE with ignition and holding. This is a live fire event in the field. Participants should expect to spend most of the day on their feet walking around the burn unit. Participants need to wear natural fiber clothing (jeans, long-sleeve cotton shirts, leather boots), no synthetic materials. Date: June 14-17, 2022** First available burn day. Participants will be given 2 days advance notice.

STEM in the Garden Teacher Training Workshop

Alabama Extension Home Grounds Team knows that for a school’s outdoor classroom to be successful it must be grown and maintained correctly. The STEM in the Garden course will train teachers and outdoor classroom volunteers on basic gardening principles, ways to align the Alabama gardening calendar with your school year calendar, and solutions to common problems associated with outdoor classrooms. STEM in the Garden will strengthen your garden knowledge while maximizing your school garden’s STEM teaching capability. This course follows along with Clemson University’s outdoor classroom curriculum, ‘STEM in the Garden,’ which is recommended for purchase to accompany the class.

June 14: Soil and Plant nutrition; Organic vs. Conventional Growing Methods
June 16- Building and Maintaining Raised Bed Gardens; Seed Starting for the Classroom
June 21- Pollinator Gardening- Who they are and what plants attract them; Insects in the Garden: How to attract beneficials and eliminate pests
June 23- Basics of Growing Vegetables and Herbs; Edible Landscaping Ideas for Outdoor Classrooms
June 28- Rain Gardens and Rainwater Harvesting; Composting and Vermicomposting in Schools
June 30- 25 Landscape Tips for the Outdoor Classroom; Ornamental Ponds: Plants and Maintenance

The STEM in the Garden course will train teachers and outdoor classroom volunteers on basic gardening principles, ways to align the Alabama gardening calendar with your school year calendar, and solutions to common problems associated with outdoor classrooms. STEM in the Garden will strengthen your garden knowledge while maximizing your school garden’s STEM teaching capability. This course follows along with Clemson University’s outdoor classroom curriculum, ‘STEM in the Garden,’ which is recommended for purchase to accompany the class.

June 14: Soil and Plant nutrition; Organic vs. Conventional Growing Methods
June 16- Building and Maintaining Raised Bed Gardens; Seed Starting for the Classroom
June 21- Pollinator Gardening- Who they are and what plants attract them; Insects in the Garden: How to attract beneficials and eliminate pests
June 23- Basics of Growing Vegetables and Herbs; Edible Landscaping Ideas for Outdoor Classrooms
June 28- Rain Gardens and Rainwater Harvesting; Composting and Vermicomposting in Schools
June 30- 25 Landscape Tips for the Outdoor Classroom; Ornamental Ponds: Plants and Maintenance
CEUs are available with each session through the AAMU/UAH Regional Inservice Center.

Learn to Burn, Bibb County

Attendees will experience this day long “start to finish”
prescribed burn. Up to twenty participants will be
accepted and assigned to crews. Each crew will be led by experienced, Alabama Certified Prescribed Burn
Managers. Participants will have access all day to
observe, ask questions, and gain EXPERIENCE with ignition and holding. This is a live fire event in the field. Participants should expect to spend most of the day on their feet walking around the burn unit. Participants need to wear natural fiber clothing (jeans, long-sleeve cotton shirts, leather boots), no synthetic materials. Date: June 14-17, 2022** First available burn day. Participants will be given 2 days advance notice.
