ForestHer – Chainsaw safety workshop

The Alabama Extension ForestHER workshop series was created with women landowners in mind. These workshops are an opportunity for women landowners to learn about forest management topics that are important to them in a relaxed, fun setting. This workshop will cover the basics of chainsaw safety. In addition to gaining valuable knowledge about chainsaw safety and personal protection equipment, the ladies will also learn how to properly start and operate a chainsaw.

Plant Propagation Workshop: Seeds and cuttings for the vegetable garden

Join us for this hands on workshop to learn how to start seeds and cuttings for your summer vegetable garden. Each participant will leave with a tray of seeds and cuttings of 11 different varieties of tomatoes, peppers, and herbs for their vegetable garden (approx. 75 total plants). Plant varieties were chosen because of their high productivity and great taste. Learn everything you need to know to grow them indoors and how to safely transplant them into your garden in the spring. Class is limited to 12 participants.

VCLLI: Southeast Diabetes Faith Initiative PreventT2

The Southeast Diabetes Faith Initiative (SDFI) helps participants achieve moderate weight loss by eating well and being active. SDFI is a yearlong program designed for people with prediabetes. It is also designed for people who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes and want to lower their risk.
By the end of the first six months, the overall goal is to:
• Lose at least 5 to 7 percent of your starting weight.
• Get at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week.

By the end of the second six months, the goal is to:
• Keep off the weight you have lost.
• Keep working toward your weight goal.
• Continue getting at least 150 minutes of activity each week.

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) Train-the-Trainer is an in-depth, 3 day training for passionate community members who want to be trained in diabetes education and management. Upon completion, the trainer is a certified DEEP educator. As certified trainers, people can give back to their communities and work with people with pre-diabetes or diabetes and care providers. By extending the knowledge and skills necessary to reduce complications resulting from diabetes, the trainers provide a valuable service to members of their communities. Each participant will leave with a tray of seeds and cuttings of 11 different varieties of tomatoes, peppers, and herbs for their vegetable garden (approx. 75 total plants). Plant varieties were chosen because of their high productivity and great taste. Learn everything you need to know to grow them indoors and how to safely transplant them into your garden in the spring. Class is limited to 12 participants.
