This series engages seniors interested in birdwatching/songbird population recovery.
Participants are “Senior Scientists” of the Virginia Caples Lifelong Learning Institute. Participants will assemble, install, manage, and monitor manmade nest boxes in their backyard or greenspace to provide suitable nesting sites for secondary cavity-nesting birds.

During this class you will learn about food choices and eating patterns, techniques of food preparation, food preservation, and the benefits of healthy preparation. High tunnel crop production and pest management workshop

This program will discuss the research being conducted on growing vegetables in high tunnels using exclusion fabric to
help reduce major damaging insects and improve crop yields. The most current research data will be discussed, including
the many benefits of using this type of growing system as well as some of the challenges. This program should be
beneficial for smaller scale vegetable farmers, both organic and traditional. NRCS and FSA Field personnel as well as
Extension Agents are encouraged to attend. This workshop will be conducted outside so please dress appropriately. We
will be following social distancing practices and masks are encouraged.

SmartMap 1.0 introduces audiences to low-cost and easy-to-use geospatial mapping apps for smartphones and tablets. The class reviews the basics of geographic information systems (GIS), GPS and smartphone applications. It provides hands-on tutorials to give attendees experience using these technologies. This workshop also introduces audiences to UAS technology and its applications for video capture and forest mapping.
