Learn to Burn – Escambia Co.

Details:
Attendees will experience this day long “start to finish”
prescribed burn. Up to twenty participants will be
accepted and assigned to crews. Each crew will be led by experienced, Alabama Certified Prescribed Burn
Managers. Participants will have access all day to
observe, ask questions, and gain EXPERIENCE with ignition and holding.
Date: April 19-23, 2021** First available burn day. Participants will be given 2 days advance notice.
Location: Brewton, AL area. Specific location will be provided to those who register.
Requirements:
This is a live fire event in the field. Participants should expect to spend most of the day on their feet walking around the burn unit. Participants need to wear natural fiber clothing (jeans, long-sleeve cotton shirts, leather boots), no synthetic materials. Covid-19 protocols will be followed; maintaining a safe distance, face coverings (flame resistant neck gaiters are available from Amazon).

Join Mr. James for a spooky good book, Scooby-Doo! A Science of Chemical Reactions Mystery: The Overreacting Ghost by Megan Cooley Peterson. Use chemical reactions to help solve Scooby Doo’s mystery! After reading the book we will conduct an experiment using the following supplies:

Materials
• Safety goggles or protective glasses
• Five teaspoons of dish soap
• One package of dry yeast
• Hydrogen peroxide, 3 percent (at least 100 mL)
• Three tablespoons
• One teaspoon
• Five 16-ounce disposable plastic cups
• Tap water
• Measuring cup
• Permanent marker
• Paper towel
• Workspace that can get wet (and won’t be damaged by any spilled hydrogen peroxide or food-colored water)
• Food coloring (optional)

A four part “All About Azaleas” series of webinars via Zoom will be presented by Extension agents, Extension specialists, local Society members, and azalea enthusiasts. The goal of this introductory azalea course is to increase the appreciation and knowledge of azaleas as well as build up interest in membership.
