If you are 60 years old or older, please consider signing up for this program- if you need help signing up online, please consider coming into the Blount County Extension Office in the Frank Green Building (or driving up) on the following dates and times for technical assistance:
Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)
The SFMNP provides resources to eligible seniors to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from authorized farmers at approved farmers markets. * Not every farmer at the market is eligible to accept the vouchers. Please look for the green and white FMNP sign or you may ask them.
Application must be submitted online at http://fma.alabama.gov/SeniorNutrition/
An application must be completed for each person in the household that qualifies for SFMNP benefits *(Must use combined monthly household income). Applicants must reapply every year.
We understand that many seniors do not have internet access or use computers. However, anyone, i.e. family members, friends, church, community organizations, etc. can complete the application for them as long as they provide the information to be entered. The senior is responsible for the accuracy of the information submitted to the Seniors Farmers Market Program staff. To be eligible for SFMNP vouchers each applicant must meet both of the following criteria:
1. Age – person must be 60 years of age or older the day of application, AND
2. Income level – recipients’ gross household income (income before taxes) must not exceed the following limits:
$1,756.00 monthly……for a household of ——1
$2,371.00 monthly……for a household of ——2
$2,987.00 monthly……for a household of ——3
$3,604.00 monthly……for a household of ——4
$4,219.00 monthly……for a household of ——5
$4,835.00 monthly……for a household of ——6
$5,452.00 monthly……for a household of ——7
$6,067.00 monthly……for a household of ——8
(Household is defined as a group of related or non-related individuals living together as one economic unit. These amounts are at 165% of 2020-2021 Federal Poverty Guidelines.)
We do not accept applications on the phone and we cannot complete online applications for seniors. The only way to apply is through the online application

Learn to Grow Asian Vegetables

Both home gardeners and small-scale commercial growers can benefit from growing Alabama-emergent Asian vegetables. Growing emergent crops, such as bitter melon and yardlong bean, enhances the novelty of gardens, the biodiversity of growing operations, and the nutritional quality of meals. Each presentation in this series provides information on the botany, growing conditions, and uses of Asian vegetables that grow well in Alabama.
