Pecan management Workshop

On Friday, November 4th the Alabama Cooperative Extension System will be teaching an educational pecan production workshop at the Talladega County Extension Office (130 N. Court Street, Talladega). The meeting begins at 9:00 a.m. and end at 12 noon. Topics to be discussed at this meeting include site selection, cultivar selection, proper planting, fertility, weed control, irrigation, insects, disease, and pecan propagation. There is no registration fee for these meetings but you must pre-register to attend as seating is limited. Shoals Master Gardener Course

A 14-week course that allows the opportunity to learn more about the natural world around you. Our classes will cover topics such as: plant pathology, vegetable gardening, fruit production, plant propagation, water conservation, soil science, and much more! Class members will have the opportunity to become certified Master Gardeners by taking part in this course.

Packinghouse HAACP

This International Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) Alliance accredited course includes produce safety, Good Manufacturing Practices, and how to develop commodity and facility specific food safety programs based on the core principles of HACCP. The hands-on course will teach participants how to develop and document a food safety management program based on the principles of HACCP for their specific operations. Breakout sessions are included in the workshop to give participants an opportunity to apply the principals of HACCP to packinghouse operations.

This Packinghouse HACCP Workshop will cover the key elements of developing a comprehensive food safety program. This workshop is for industry professionals involved in packinghouse food safety as well as educators and consultants working with the fruit and vegetable industry.

The registration fee for the course is $400. This includes course materials, certificate with official HACCP seal, and meals/refreshments each day.

Master Gardener Course

The Tallapoosa County Extension Office will again offer the Master Gardener Volunteer Program in 2019, with a starting date on Friday, February 1st. All classes will be held during the day from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the County Extension office located in Dadeville. Applications are now being accepted and will be accepted through Friday, January 18th.The fee associated with this course is $140 per person. The Alabama Master Gardener training program will consist of 13 weeks of horticulture related classes and training. The course provides more than 50 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction in horticulture and related areas. Classes taught include soils and plant nutrition; composting, plant diseases; landscape design and plant selection; weed identification and control; entomology; pesticide education, fruit culture; plant propagation; home lawn care; vegetable gardening; wildlife control, care and maintenance of landscape plants; bedding plants, and more. Courses are taught by specialists from Auburn University, Extension agents from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, fellow certified Master Gardeners, and local horticulture professionals.
