In this lecture you will learn about the ancient Mayans and Aztecs and their love of chocolate and how it became a worldwide culinary sensation. Chocolate has an interesting history of how it spread from a beverage of the Aztec royalty to the mainstay of an American sweet tooth. We will look into the production of the coca bean and the differences in dark, milk and white chocolate. Join us as we delve into the ultimate sweetness of chocolate, the legendary food of the gods.

The Alabama Master Gardener Program is a volunteer training program by which the Alabama Cooperative Extension System expands its outreach mission to the citizens of Alabama. This program represents an effective partnership between the land-grant universities of this state and motivated volunteers interested in educating their communities with research-based information. RUP Training for Private Applicators–Jackson County

RUP Training for Private Applicators

These classes are designed for the farmers who need to take the private pesticide applicator test in order to purchase restricted use products. However, we will be discussing chemical safety and sprayer calibration at this class, so anyone who sprays pesticides on a large scale will benefit from this training even if a restricted pesticide license is not needed. If you would like to attend any of these classes call the Extension Office of the County you want to attend and make your reservation as seating is limited in some locations. A fee of $20 will be charged for this training and testing. An additional licensing fee of $25 will be sent to the Department of Agriculture and Industries by the applicant. The licensing fee is not included in the training and testing fee. Please plan to pay with a check (checks are preferred) made out the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) in the amount of $20 or with the correct cash amount.

  • Participants will test at the end of the training course (must obtain a passing
    grade of 70 percent or higher).
  • Statewide training/testing dates will be Jan. 1–Sept. 30 of each year.
  • No training courses will be offered Oct. 1–Dec. 31 of any year.
  • If applicant passes, he or she will forward permit fees ($25) to the
    Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries for issuance of permit.
  • Pre-register with your County office.

Town Hall Meeting

The Lowndes County Extension office invites you to a Community Conversation to discuss the health and wellness of our community. The meeting will be led by the David Mathews Center for Civic Life (DMC) and will help identify and map key community assets and challenges. It also will challenge the community to identify a shared sense of direction. Following the conclusion of the Community Conversation, DMC staff will write a comprehensive report on the county’s assets, challenges, partnerships and action ideas.This Community Conversation will take place at the Lowndes County Commission Auditorium, 205 East Tuskeena Street, Hayneville, Alabama 36040. The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. on February 13, 2019.

Master Gardener Course

The Tallapoosa County Extension Office will again offer the Master Gardener Volunteer Program in 2019, with a starting date on Friday, February 1st. All classes will be held during the day from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the County Extension office located in Dadeville. Applications are now being accepted and will be accepted through Friday, January 18th.The fee associated with this course is $140 per person. The Alabama Master Gardener training program will consist of 13 weeks of horticulture related classes and training. The course provides more than 50 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction in horticulture and related areas. Classes taught include soils and plant nutrition; composting, plant diseases; landscape design and plant selection; weed identification and control; entomology; pesticide education, fruit culture; plant propagation; home lawn care; vegetable gardening; wildlife control, care and maintenance of landscape plants; bedding plants, and more. Courses are taught by specialists from Auburn University, Extension agents from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, fellow certified Master Gardeners, and local horticulture professionals. Bees Wax Workshop

Bees Wax Workshop-4-H participants, please join us for a Bees Wax Workshop, Sat. Feb. 16, 2019 from 9AM til noon. To register call 334-749-3353 at the Extension office. Cost will be $15.00 and you must be registered in 4honline. It is amazing to see the many uses of bees wax. You will also learn a lot about honey bees from Damon Wallace, the Master Bee Man! You will make candles, lip balm and lotions from beeswax and take them home for your own use. This will be a great experience for your child. Please make plans for them to attend.
