River Cane Rescue
By Dr. Mark Smith, Assistant Professor & Extension Specialist
River cane, a plant species that once commanded a majestic and prominent place on Alabama landscapes, was all but lost following European settlement and large-scale cotton farming. Now it is making a comeback, thanks partly to the efforts of Mark Smith, Extension wildlife specialist.
River cane will never recapture its past grandeur, but it will serve a valuable role aiding environmental restoration efforts throughout the state as well as restoring a measure of Alabama's pristine splendor.
