AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. — Gardeners can grow their education and community through the Alabama Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program. Registration for the program’s fall training course is now open until June 30.
Who Are Extension Master Gardener Volunteers?

Alabama Extension Master Gardener volunteers help support community gardens across the state.
The Extension Master Gardener program is for adults in Alabama who want to gain knowledge and experience with home horticulture. Whether someone has previous experience with gardening or is looking to get started, this program explains topics such as soils, plant physiology, integrated pest management and managing ornamental, lawn and food-producing plants.
“We welcome everybody,” said Kerry Smith, Alabama Extension Master Gardener Program coordinator. “We do get quite a few people who don’t have any prior experience or prior knowledge. The common thread for all applicants is their love for plants.”
To receive an Extension Master Gardener certification, applicants must complete a 14-week training course and log a minimum of 50 Extension volunteer hours. The 2026 Master Gardener fall course will run Aug. 13 to Nov. 5. It includes online work, hands-on learning and field trips.
Why Become an Extension Master Gardener?
Smith said this program is a great way for people to make new friends and share something they love to do.
Helping in the community is a big part of being an Extension Master Gardener. Throughout the year, participants volunteer with a variety of Extension agents and projects, including Alabama Smart Yards and Grow More, Give More.
“The people drawn to this program enjoy learning — likely life-long learning,” Smith said. “They also enjoy giving their time and sharing knowledge in their communities through garden-related projects.”
