With the holiday season quickly approaching, many people will soon begin shopping. Although shopping during the holidays can be fun, it can also be an opportune time for criminals to surface. Unfortunately, the crime rate rises to an all time high during this time of year. Remembering safety first will help many consumers through this period.

Here are some helpful shopping tips:

• Always accompany small children to a public restroom. Never let them go alone.
• Do not leave your purse unattended in shopping carts. It only takes a second for a criminal to take it!
• Try to park your vehicle in a well-lit area of a parking lot.
• Avoid shopping alone. Thieves will become aware of this and possibly follow you to your vehicle.
• Wear a fanny pack instead of carrying a purse.
• Check the back seat before entering your vehicle.
• Always report questionable persons or behavior to the police and/or shopping mall security.

Also, many consumers will conduct their shopping online to avoid the crowds that are associated with holiday shopping. But be aware that shopping online can be just as dangerous as going to malls, etc. When purchasing on the Web, follow these tips to prevent identity theft and fraud:

• Never give out personal information unless a transaction has been initiated over a secure encrypted connection.
• Know your online merchant.
• Check to see if the Web site provides a customer service number.
• Talk with your children about how to use the Internet safely.
