Greenspace includes greenways, trails, and just open space. Greenways are corridors of protected open space managed for conservation and recreation pruposes. They often follow natural land or water features and link nature reserves, parks, cultural features and historic sites with each other and with populated areas. Trails are paths used for walking, bicycling, horesback riding or other forms of recreation or transportation. Open greenspace is often converted from deserted property or unused land owned by city, county or state governments. The Greenspace program in Alabama is a resource for those wishing to develop, purchase, or convert rails, open space, or potential trails into areas for public consumption. The Greenspace program is internet based and provides links to information in all areas of Greenspace development.
