URBAN NUTRITION

The Power of Choice curriculum is offered in a one-unit module. It incorporates the recommendations of the USDA's new Food Guidance System (MyPyramid and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans). Part One includes the Orientation Session and Basic Nutrition. There are 10 lessons in the curriculum that address topics relating to nutrition education: Nutrition, MyPyramid, Dietary Guidelines, Food Safety, Reading Food Labels, Food Preparation, and making Healthy Snacks. The unit lesson consists of the following sections:
The delivery mode is primarily print-based in conjunction with overhead transparencies, food models, videotapes, and food demonstrations to reinforce learning objectives.
An orientation session is conducted to enroll participants and administer the participant's Pre-assessment Inventory prior to the start of the first lesson. The complete Power of Choice module contains 10 lessons. Each lesson is approximately 60 minutes in length. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate of completion.
Power of Choice is designed for English-speaking youth who attend after-school programs. It is targeted for both males and females. It requires participants to have adequate verbal comprehension ability and the motivation to learn in an interactive group environment.
