Home & Family
Getting through the day without making a single decision is nearly impossible, especially for middle and high school students. From peer pressure to social media, young people are constantly faced with choices that can impact their health, relationships, and future. That’s why programs like Health Rocks!®, a nationally recognized 4-H curriculum, are so important. Health Rocks!® empowers youth with critical life skills to make informed and responsible choices, particularly when it comes to risky behaviors like substance use. Through hands-on activities, reflective discussions, and real-life scenarios, the curriculum empowers youths to evaluate situations, manage stress, resist peer pressure, and confidently make healthy choices.
Common Youth Questions
Every day, young people find themselves asking questions, such as:
- Would my parents be proud of the decision I’m making?
- If I do this, will my friends think I’m cool?
- Am I doing this just to fit in?
- Will I feel good about this tomorrow?
- How will this choice affect my goals?
Family, friends, social media, and emotions all influence the choices youth make. While these factors can create pressure, Health Rocks!® encourages young people to pause, think critically, and weigh the consequences of their actions. Smart decision-making isn’t just about avoiding trouble—it’s about building a life based on values, self-respect, and long-term goals.
Who’s Making the Decision?
The “Who’s Making the Decision?” chapter of the Health Rocks!® curriculum provides youths with these steps to make thoughtful and healthy decisions:
- Identify the decision that needs to be made.
- Brainstorm possible options or choices.
- Select the most realistic and appropriate options.
- List the positives and negatives of each selected option.
- Consider both short-term and long-term consequences.
- Choose the option that leads to the best outcome.
By practicing these steps, young people build confidence in their ability to handle everyday challenges and long-term life decisions. With support from caring adults and evidence-based programs like Health Rocks!®, youth can develop the skills they need to make healthy, positive choices—one decision at a time.
