Helpful Ideas for Family Renovations

Amazed at the family
problems seen so often in today's society? Can't believe all
the new "super nanny" television shows for failed parents?
You're not alone. Chances are that most families could use a
vitamin B12 shot of family time and activities, especially when
research reveals that youngsters are 12 times more likely to
watch TV than engage in household conversations. Add to this
a busy schedule of activities, such as church, baseball, soccer,
music lessons, or gymnastics, and we can stop wondering why families
don't relate well today.
Here is a list of ideas that parents
can use to bond with their kids.
Dinner and a movie: Spend an evening whipping up a theme meal to
accompany a favorite movie. For example, watch the "Lady
and The Tramp" while eating spaghetti. Why not make the
night a learning experience and make an ethnic dish and watch
an international film? I think you get the idea. But whatever
you do, make sure each family member has a role in making the
night a success, then finish up with a tasty theme dessert.
Low impact outdoor games: Full contact tackle football probably doesn't
fit the bill, but badminton, croquette, horseshoes, Frisbee tossing,
or a basketball shooting game of Horse might be the ticket for
family fun.
Crafty projects: Find the right project and you're guaranteed
success! Ideas might include homemade birdfeeders, a scarecrow
for the garden, a family totem pole, a family banner, or even
stringing popcorn and fruit for wildlife.
Family game night: It might seem like this idea wouldn't
need to be mentioned, but it may be rare in our world today.
Try playing games like UNO, Twister, Sorry, Pictionary, Monopoly,
and others to bring your family together around the table like
we used to do.
Eating in the wilderness: We normally think of picnics as something we
can do, yet rarely do, but how about a breakfast picnic at the
park? Keep it simple with juice boxes, muffins, fruit, and yogurt;
then go play! Breakfast at a restaurant is also a treat for some
families. One of my children's best memories is a picnic on the
roof of our house! They loved it! Just plain ole eating together
is a good way for families to interact these days.
Family video/photo night: How about sitting down and watching your own
family videos together, or looking at family photo albums together?
We all love to see ourselves in action; but don't forget the
popcorn!
Camp out in tame surroundings: Rather than trouble the family with a wilderness
outing, how about camping in your own backyard? Less packing
is involved and you can still have an adventure in a tent. You
can also cook a meal over some coals or with an inexpensive grill
at ground level, but don't forget the smores!
Of course there are other things you
can do together like hiking, walking, a family bicycle ride,
or even a surprise lunch (picnic) with the kids at school or
in a park. The main thing is to turn OFF the television and do
something together as a family! What great things we could accomplish
if we'd only give it a try! I will--will you?
