If you lived in public housing during the late 80s or early 90s chances are your neighbor was either black or white. This is no longer the case in Huntsville. In fact, you may not be able to speak your neighbor's native language or understand their accent. However, in order for people to live in harmony, it's important to value cultural differences and to accept the contributions all nationalities bring to our society. That's where a well-trained Extension diversity specialist or county Extension agent comes in handy.
An Extension specialist or county agent skilled in diversity and multicultural issues can help individuals from different ethnic or religious backgrounds to respect and possibly accept various cultural differences. One way to help break down cultural barriers is to sponsor a "cultural fair."
Cultural fairs are no different than other fairs. The objectives are usually achieved through an exchange of dialogue, music, dance, exhibits, and food. Although there are many similarities among racial or ethnic groups such as valuing family and the celebration of traditional holidays, each group can still learn something unique about the other. And don't forget to invite seniors to participate who have a wealth of cultural traditions to share with future generations.
As the saying goes, "It takes all kinds of people to make the world go round!"
