In July 2001, the
Campaign Study Group for the Pew Partnership for Civic Change
conducted a survey among 600 business, nonprofit, and local government
leaders in 200 cities across the United States. The study took
an in-depth look at the pros and cons of "partnerships."
The general consensus was that although partnerships are time
consuming, they are worth the effort in the long run.
Top national leaders recognized their strengths
such as the ability to obtain volunteers or capital, a desire
to improve their communities, and leadership capabilities. They
also recognized the broad importance of pooling their resources
in an era when there is a decline in federal dollars for community
outreach or other projects.
Partnerships also help organizations to:
- Share valuable information on demographics,
funding, or public health
- Improve financial or in-kind support
- Handle difficult issues collectively
Whatever the reason, establishing community
partnerships is an excellent way to strengthen local communities.
