in 2001 (9.6 percent of the total births).
- 6,992 births had inadequate prenatal care
in 2001 (11.5 percent of total births).
- 45,052 marriages occurred in 2001.
- 24,159 divorces occurred in 2001.

Nutrition & Health
- 45,196 total deaths in Alabama in 2001.
- 13,177 deaths were due to heart disease
in 2001 (29.1 percent of the total deaths).
- 9,783 deaths were due to cancer in 2001.
(21.6 percent of the total deaths).
- 1,339 deaths were due to diabetes in 2001.

Grandparents and Relatives Raising Children
- Nationwide, approximately 8.4 percent
of children 18 and under are being raised by a grandparent or
other relative. In Alabama the rate jumps to 10.1 percent, with
some counties having rates as high as 19 percent.
- Conversely, 56,369 grandparents are responsible
for one or more of their grandchildren in Alabama. 24.3 percent
of these grandparents have been responsible for their grandchildren
for 5 years or more.

Youth
- There were 8,592 high school dropouts
statewide in 2001.
- 8,993 babies were born to teenagers age
10-19 (14.9 percent of total births).
- Of the 5,815 low weight births in 2001,
1,031 or 17.7 percent were born to teenagers 10-19 years-of-age.

Domestic Violence
- Of the 19,873 violent offenses reported
in 2001, 20 percent were domestic violence incidents (excluding
simple assaults).
- 34 percent of the simple assaults in 2001
were domestic violence incidents.
- 75 percent of the victims were females,
25 percent were males. Sixty percent of the victims were black,
and 40 percent were white.
- In 63 percent of the domestic violence
offenses the offender was black, and in 75 percent the offender
was male.
- In 34 percent of domestic violence offenses
in 2001 the victim was the wife of the offender; in 38 percent
the victim was the girlfriend of the offender.
- There were 40 domestic homicides reported
in 2001. Domestic homicides were 11 percent of the 349 total
homicides reported for Alabama in 2001.
- 47 percent of the homicides had black
victims and black offenders, 53 percent of the white victims
had white offenders.
