About Us
Alabama Extension’s Urban SNAP-Ed program collaborates with the Food Bank of North Alabama’s Park-It-Market initiative to deliver fresh produce to people living in food deserts.
About the Park-It-Market
The Park-It-Market is a refrigerated mobile vehicle of the North Alabama Food Bank that visits locations, such as schools, libraries, public housing, and senior nutrition sites. Part-It-Market allows people to fill a bag with fresh fruits and vegetables of their choice. This pop-up market is a valuable resource for those who live in food deserts and do not have easy access to local grocery stores.
Program Impact
During June 2024, Alabama Extension partnered with the North Alabama Food Bank to reach over 700 families in Lawrence County alone. Ten thousand pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables were delivered to people through this collaborative effort. As a result, individuals and families received nutritional food and added savings to their food budget. In addition, the Urban SNAP-Ed program distributed recipe cards, food demonstration samples, and garden seeds.
The Food Bank of North Alabama also offers pre-packaged non-perishable food items, including pasta, canned meats, vegetables, and milk. This program reached an estimated 300 families to help reduce food insecurity.
The community partnership, which includes local volunteers, reduces food disparities and ensures program success by reaching underserved communities. More importantly, it makes fresh and healthy food accessible to those who need it most.
