Spraying a cotton field.

Initially introduced to the market in the 1970s, plant growth regulators (PGRs) have proven a practical cotton plant canopy and size management tool for producers.

Alabama Cooperative Extension System Cotton Specialist, Dr. Steve Brown, said there is not an exact recipe for PGR application and timing; producers must adjust as the season unfolds.

Factors to consider include:

  • Current and forecasted weather
  • Cotton variety
  • Fertility
  • Irrigation
  • Field history
  • Fruit retention
  • Presence or absence of crop injury
  • Calendar date
  • Row pattern
