Spraying a cotton field.

Initially introduced to the market in the 1970s, plant growth regulators (PGRs) have proven a practical cotton plant canopy and size management tool for producers.

Alabama Cooperative Extension System Cotton Specialist, Steve Brown, said there is not an exact recipe for PGR application and timing; producers must adjust as the season unfolds.

Factors to consider include:

  • Current and forecasted weather
  • Cotton variety
  • Fertility
  • Irrigation
  • Field history
  • Fruit retention
  • Presence or absence of crop injury
  • Calendar date
  • Row pattern
