The Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Alabama A&M University is pleased to announce a new milestone in the career of Extension Animal Science Specialist Felix Samuel. He received his license to practice veterinary medicine and surgery from the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Additionally, Samuel is a current resident in animal reproduction with the American College of Theriogenologists.

Professional Background

Samuel earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine, as well as a master’s and a doctorate degree in theriogenology, from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria. He also holds a master’s degree in food science (animal health concentration) from Alabama A&M University and is a fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria.

Before joining Alabama Extension, he worked extensively with the National Animal Production Research Institute and served as a faculty member at Ahmadu Bello University, where he was involved in clinical practice, research, and student mentorship.

Extension Program Impact

Samuel’s licensure allows him not only to deliver veterinary care but also to provide practical clinical support to animal producers, small-scale farmers, researchers, and others involved in animal health. With his current training as a resident in theriogenology, he will improve reproductive outcomes in small ruminants and other food-producing animals across the state. His work specifically involves fertility research, breeding evaluations, and training in reproductive technologies, such as semen collection and analysis, estrus synchronization, and artificial insemination.

More importantly, this licensure and specialized training will enhance clinical learning opportunities for animal science students, offer mentorship to future veterinarians, and support the development of new internships and applied research initiatives.

“I am excited about enhancing Alabama Extension’s and AAMU’s animal health education and hands-on learning experiences for small farmers and the next generation of animal science professionals,” Samuel said.

Samuel also leads the Alabama Goat and Sheep Summit each fall. This year, the event will be held Saturday, November 15, in the James Dawson Building Auditorium and The People’s Patch Madison County Community Farm in Huntsville.
