Season 6 Episode 5—Alabama Drought Reach
On this episode of the Alabama Crops Report, hosts Josh Lee, Jacob Sizemore and Chandler Gruener talk with Laura Bell Cooley of the Auburn University Water Resources Center and Brianne Minton of the Alabama Office of the State Climatologist. They discuss the Alabama Drought Reach Program and ways listeners can help contribute to drought data as citizen scientists.
The climate office does drought research. They give input to the U.S. Drought Monitor every week, and they needed more on-the-ground data to fill in some of the data gaps they had with observational data sets. That was a great way for Extension to get involved. So those conversations were in the works for a few years. Then funding Alabama Drought Reach happened in 2023. I was the first coordinator for Alabama Drought Reach, and then I was very happy to pass it over to Laura, who’s doing an excellent job keeping the program alive and well. – Brianne Minton
