Thoughts from Emily
Preinternship
This summer, I’m looking forward to gaining real-world experience in environmental education and learning more about how Extension programs make a difference in local communities. I’m especially excited to be part of Alabama Extension’s work because it combines science, outreach, and service in such a meaningful way. I hope to build my skills in communication, public engagement, and water quality monitoring while getting a better understanding of how I can make a positive impact through this field.
Postinternship
I developed my skills in communication, public engagement, and water quality monitoring by talking with my mentor everyday, taking part in Alabama Water Watch events, and getting certified in water-quality monitoring. My biggest accomplishment from my internship was making a classroom activity for teachers to use to teach water chemistry to their students. One of my favorite memories was when I went with my office coworkers on a pitcher plant tour after our annual meeting ended. My biggest takeaway from this internship was how important outreach is to getting noticed, especially if you are a community-based organization. My advice for future interns would be to keep a constant stream of communication between you and your mentor. Your mentor is there to help you make your internship as beneficial as possible.
