Food is the fuel that keeps your body running smoothly. Food gives nutrients to meet each person’s healthy eating habits and lifestyle. Alabama Extension Human Sciences educators can help you meet your health goals or reduce your risk of diet-related chronic diseases.

Tips for Fueling Up

Eat with the natural environment in mind by enjoying more plant-based meals. Limit package foods. Try to buy fresh foods in season and shop locally when possible. You can also start a garden to grow food at home.

  • Alabama Extension Human Sciences educators can help you learn how your nutritional needs change with ACES Human Sciences programs: Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP), Right Bite: Setting the Table for Health Eating, and Color Me Healthy program for pre-K students.
  • Plan your meals and snacks to stay healthy and save money. Before grocery shopping, check your pantry, use a grocery list, and shop the sales. Educate yourself about community resources in your area. These include food pantries, Farmers to Families, senior meal programs, SNAP, WIC, Farmers Market Incentive Program, and Breakfast Program for School.
  • Eat a variety of foods from all food groups, whether fresh, frozen, canned, or dried. Include your favorite cultural foods and traditions in your meals. Avoid trendy diets that promote unhealthy eating habits, and make sure to practice self-love.
  • Learn how to cook at home and make tasty foods with new flavors and foods worldwide. Find creative ways to use leftovers instead of throwing them away. Create happy memories by eating with family and friends.
