Extension Specialist to Help Hurricane Ravaged Communities
Alabama communities have a new resource to help them restore and repair badly damaged urban forests. Beginning September 1, Beau Brodbeck came on board in response to recent hurricane and storms that have plagued Alabama and the Gulf Coast . Beau will be located in the Bay Minette office of the Baldwin County Extension System. His duties will include monitoring compliance of USDA Forest Funds used by communities for urban tree replacements, remediation, assessments, and inventories. He will also develop educational programs for citizens, municipal employees, and private contractors.

Hurricane Ivan Financial Assistance Program Project Summary
The Hurricane Ivan Financial Assistance Program is well on its way. To date there
51grants underway in the Urban Tree Replacement, Urban Tree Assessment, and Urban Tree Remediation
categories in an estimated 32 communities. Communities working with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System or planting hurricane resistant trees, replacing trees lost or damaged during last years series of devastating hurricanes.
Additionally, Auburn University has contracted with ArborPro, to provide professional tree assessment services to 5 communities in Alabama. To date four of the five communities have been assessed and are in the process of developing prioritized work lists and maps for the remediation contractors who will begin in many of these communities in early June, 2006.
The remedial pruning has begun in Fairhope and Daphne who applied for their own funds, however, for most of the communities Auburn University will be contracting with a single contractor to provide remedial services following their urban tree assessments.
