CERTIFICATION WORKSHOPS
Citizens learn principles of AWW and how to monitor and evaluate physical, chemical and biological features of water. Workshops are offered free of charge and carry Continuing Education Units (CEUs) with Auburn University.
Water Chemistry Monitoring
Six hour sessions that train citizens in the program's goals and how to monitor and evaluate physical and chemical features of water. Water quality parameters, shown below, are measured with a customized test kit to form the core of the citizen data.
Recertification (required review for certified monitors)
One hour sessions where all monitors and their test kits are required to be certified annually as part of an EPA-approved QA Manual for citizen data.
At the recertification sessions, monitors test water side-by-side with the QA Officer to assure that techniques and equipment are acceptable.
During this workshop all reagents are replaced to maintain the test kits at an optimum performance.
Bacteriological Monitoring
Two hour sessions where citizens are trained in bacteriological testing for E. coli and other coliforms and water quality standards.
Monitors are trained in:
 |
- Biological testing
- Water quality standards
- Plate Techniques
- Bacterial Counts
- Site Selection

Stream Biological Monitoring
Four hour sessions that teach the principles and practice of using stream macroinvertabrates in evaluation of a stream's water quality. Training is done using an environmental game called, MACROMANIA, to simulate field collection. Trainees then go to the field and collect "critters" to evaluate stream conditions and macroinvertebrate communities.
