CULLMAN COUNTY 2007 REPORT

About Cullman County

Cullman County was named after Col. John G. Cullmann, an immigrant from Frankweiler, Germany, who brought five families with him to settle in the area in 1873. A year later, an election was held to incorporate the town he founded, and it was named after him--minus an "n." Cullman is still the county seat. Today, the county boasts the only dry Oktoberfest in the world.

The rural county's population is more than 94 percent white, 2 percent black and 4 percent Hispanic. The county has 19 elementary schools, eight middle schools, eight high schools, a technical school and Wallace State Community College.

Cullman is home to the Ave Maria Grotto, Clarkson Covered Bridge, Smith Lake, Sportsman Lake, Hurricane Creek Park and the Peinhardt Living History Farm.

Cullman County leads the state in agricultural production. Major agricultural products include poultry, beef cattle, sweet potatoes, nursery plants, corn and forest products. Cullman County is ranked as one of the top 60 counties in America in total agricultural income. Our community values the relationship of the farmer to our economy, our Farm-City Committee has been recognized as one of the best in the state in past decade.
