Backyard Basics: Managing Biodiversity at Home

Jon Archer Agriculture Center, 1070 Schillinger Rd N, Mobile, AL 36608

Our backyard belongs to the general urban-suburban landscape as urbanization is constantly growing, and rural towns in Alabama are rapidly expanding. Our backyard is the habitat for different types of living organisms: trees, shrubs, plants, animals, birds, pollinators etc. Homeowners may want to manage their backyard to optimize benefits and reduce problems related to these living organisms, and therefore they first need to learn about basic aspects of backyard biodiversity management. In this workshop attendees will obtain useful and practical knowledge on the following topics: selection of appropriate species for tree planting, basics of tree law, creating a backyard habitat for enhancing biodiversity, and managing nuisance backyard wildlife. This workshop is ideal for homeowners, and everyone who is interested in creating sustainable backyard biodiversity.
