Producers can use rollers with oscillating sides to terminate cover crops.

Rollers are an option used by farmers to flatten and kill cover crops before planting a cash crop, alone or in conjunction with chemical termination.

Rollers differ in several ways:

  • Cost and ease of assembly.
  • Weight and horsepower requirements.
  • Vibration to the tractor and driver.
  • Operating speed.
  • Termination effectiveness.

Multiple roller designs exist for traditional row crop agriculture and vegetable and organic production requiring small-scale tractors.  Consult with local extension agents or farm services offices to determine the best roller option for your operation.
