ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY, Ala. — If you are an educator and have a desire to start a garden at your school, then consider attending the STEM in the Garden: Teacher Training Series workshop on July 31 or Sept. 22.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Home Horticulture team understands that for a school’s outdoor classroom to be successful, the garden must be properly grown and maintained. The STEM in the Garden program trains educators on basic gardening principles, ways to align the Alabama gardening calendar with the school year calendar, and solutions to common problems associated with outdoor classrooms. This program is an excellent way to strengthen garden knowledge and maximize a school garden’s STEM teaching capabilities. Additionally, educators can earn up to 6.5 continuing education units through PowerSchool.

Alabama Cooperative Extension System Urban Regional Agent Allyson Shabel is coordinating the events.

“This is a good opportunity for teachers to learn best practices for taking care of their school outdoor classroom while also earning continuing education credits,” said Shabel, who represents Alabama Extension at Alabama A&M University.
