ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY, Ala. — The Basic Needs Coalition (BNC) at Alabama A&M University (AAMU) is moving forward in 2023. Its work first began in 2019 when former AAMU President Andrew Hugine signed an agreement with Presidents United to Stop Hunger, better known as PUSH. PUSH is a global initiative of university presidents and chancellors that fight against hunger and malnutrition.

Under the leadership of Andrea Morris, an Extension interim associate director and health and nutrition specialist, the BNC met recently to welcome new members, report on current activities and coordinate its next plan of action. The group recently received $25,000 dollars in grant funds to support the on-campus food pantry and the Bulldog Market which aids in reducing food insecurity.

“BNC members have a true heart to meet the basic needs of students so that they can focus on their education and prepare for their future beyond the university,” Morris said.

The Basic Needs Coalition meets monthly to support student needs, such as housing, finances, hunger and mental and physical health.
