AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. — For Alabama residents, property taxes are due Oct. 1 and are delinquent after Dec. 31. There is often some confusion surrounding property taxes. To help residents better prepare, Alabama Extension at Auburn University is hosting the Preparing for Property Taxes workshop in several locations throughout the fall.

This free, one-hour workshop will help homeowners and landowners better understand the ins and outs of property taxes. This includes understanding the calculation of property taxes, identifying potential money-saving exemptions, interpreting tax bills and exploring payment options.

“This new workshop gives Alabamians the tools to decode their tax bills and uncover potential ways to save,” said Portia Johnson, an Alabama Extension financial management specialist at Auburn University. “Knowledge is power. When Alabama residents know more about their property taxes, they are not just informed, they are financially empowered.”

Upcoming Sessions

Extension agents are currently scheduling workshop sessions. To find a session nearest you, visit the Alabama Extension website calendar at aces.edu/go/PreparingforPropertyTaxes. More sessions will be added to the calendar throughout the fall.

An Alabama Extension Human Sciences agent will present each workshop session in partnership with local tax professionals. After a 30-minute presentation from the Extension agent, attendees will engage with local tax professionals in the question-and-answer portion of the workshop. Through this partnership, Johnson — also an assistant professor in the Auburn College of Human Sciences — hopes that residents will gain practical knowledge and make connections with their local resources.

“Having a local tax official and a trained finance Extension expert together in one room creates a rare opportunity for Alabama homeowners and landowners to ask questions, get answers and take control of their property finances,” Johnson said. “Preparing for Property Taxes is not just a free workshop; it is a movement to make property tax and housing education accessible, practical and personal for every Alabamian.”
