AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. — For farmers, having access to expert advice is crucial in today’s ever-changing financial and legal landscapes. Alabama Extension’s Essentials of Farm Taxes and Estate Planning seminar gives farmers and landowners the chance to learn and ask questions in real time as they create road maps for their farms and families.

There are three opportunities to attend this seminar: Aug. 10, 11 and 12 in Athens, Boligee and Monroeville, respectively. The seminar will start at 5:30 p.m. each night, and a meal will be provided. Attendance is free, but online registration is required before Aug. 7. To register and for specific venue details, visit aces.edu/go/FTEPSeminar.

Topics and Speakers

Dennis Brothers, an associate Extension professor at Auburn University, said the seminar will cover many topics related to taxes and estate planning.

“Whether you’re looking to improve your tax strategy, strengthen your business financials or start planning for the future, this seminar will provide valuable information that you can put to use right away,” Brothers said. “We’ll cover topics like depreciation, tax forms and estate planning — helping farmers gain confidence and take the next steps in planning for the long-term success of their operations.”

The seminar will feature two special presenters. Katie Keown, a visiting agriculture law professor at Auburn University, will cover the estate planning-related topics.

“Katie’s top specialties are estate planning and farm succession issues,” Brothers said. “She is a farm girl who turned attorney for the sole purpose of helping farmers and ranchers navigate the legal issues facing farms today.”

Adam Kantrovich, an agribusiness specialist with Clemson Cooperative Extension, will present information on several items related to farm taxes.

“Adam has been my go-to guy for agricultural taxes for a long time,” Brothers said. “He has tremendous experience working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other government agencies regarding agricultural tax issues.”
