Crop Production
Farm Overview
- Location: Coffee Springs—Geneva County, Alabama
- Crop: Cotton
- Planting date: May 16, 2025
- Variety: DG-3615B3XF
- Area: 41.38 acres
- Row Spacing: 40 inches
- Irrigation: Center pivot
- Tillage: None
Objectives
- Evaluate how integrating variable rate seeding, (MISSING TEXT)
- Determine if nitrogen application can improve cotton yield and resource efficiency in south Alabama under center pivot irrigation.
Treatments
This trial evaluates how different seeding rates and nitrogen application levels affect crop water use and yield. By using sensor-based crop monitoring, the goal is to optimize input use and minimize excessive application of nitrogen and water. The following table outlines the different seeding and nitrogen rates tested in this trial.
| Variable Rate Seeding (Seeds per Acre) | Variable Rate Nitrogen (Pounds per Acre) |
|---|---|
| 23,000 | 50 |
| 26,000 | 70 |
| 29,000 | 90 |
| 32,000 |

Activities
- Installing soil moisture sensors at 16 locations throughout the field.
-
The soil-moisture sensors were installed at
8, 16, and 24 inches deep.
-
Both Trellis Watermark and Acclima
soil-moisture sensors were used.
- Documenting Trellis Watermark readings and leaf area index measurements.
- Applying urea on the field trial.
- Testing water uniformity.
- Testing water uniformity.
