*This is an excerpt from Beef Cattle Management in Uncertain Times
Feed costs represent the largest single cost item in most beef operations. In many economic analyses, feed costs represent more than 50 percent of the variation in profit or loss differences between herds. Many beef producers routinely use by-product feeds, while numerous others use them only sporadically, such as during drought conditions when available forage is limited. Evaluate feedstuffs based on their cost per pound of energy (dollars per pound of TDN) or protein (dollars per pound of crude protein) provided. This will help producers identify more economical feed resources including by-product feeds that can help balance cattle diets.
