Thoughts from Carson

Preinternship

During this internship, I hope to gain valuable, hands-on experience that will enhance both my personal and professional growth. Professionally, I aim to develop a deeper understanding of community outreach, educational programming, and effective communication strategies. I want to hone my ability to create engaging and accessible content that resonates with diverse audiences. Personally, I look forward to collaborating with experienced mentors and community members, building meaningful relationships, and learning how to navigate real-world challenges with creativity and adaptability.

What excites me most about working with Alabama Extension is the opportunity to contribute to impactful programs that directly benefit local communities. I appreciate the organization’s commitment to education, wellness, and resource accessibility, and I am eager to support its mission. This summer, I want to strengthen my skills in program development, public engagement, and multimedia storytelling. Whether through refining visual aids or enhancing outreach strategies, I hope to build a well-rounded skill set that will serve me in future creative and community-oriented roles.

Postinternship

Over the course of my internship this summer, I had the opportunity to fully immerse myself in the goals I set back in June. I worked closely with Extension agents and community members to design and deliver programs that really spoke to the needs of each audience. I was also given the opportunity to strengthen my broader communication and marketing skills by refining outreach materials that helped showcase our programs and relay information in a way that was both attractive and effective.

One of my favorite parts of this internship was our Youth Cooking Camp at the IHOPE Center in Goodwater. Running the kids’ cooking camp gave me firsthand experience translating educational goals into joyful, hands-on learning. It underscored my biggest takeaway: when we take the time to anticipate needs and build inclusive learning spaces, people lean in and grow. To future interns, be curious, stay flexible, and embrace every opportunity to connect. The
relationships you build and the care you put into your work will shape both your experience and the success of your programs.
