Thoughts from Carlin
Preinternship
During my internship, I am hoping to get the full Alabama Extension experience. I would like to make many connections with industry professionals, while also learning about any opportunities that may be available to me in the future relating to Alabama Extension. Having considered Extension as a possible career choice, I am sure that my time in this role will allow me to decide whether this is a career that I would like to pursue or not. Specifically, I am hoping to better my communication skills and develop a good work ethic. I am interested mostly to work with Alabama Extension because of the opportunities that it will provide me to make connections, as well as to help those in and around my community.
Postinternship
During my internship, I was able to grow in the exact areas I had hoped to develop. My communication skills significantly improved through working with youth, volunteers, and Extension professionals at both the county and state levels. By taking part in major events like Competitive Events Day, the State 4-H Horse Show, and the State Livestock Judging Contest, I built a stronger work ethic, learned how to manage time effectively, and saw firsthand the behind-the-scenes effort it takes to run successful programs. Making connections with Extension staff and learning about different roles within the organization helped me better understand the opportunities that exist and confirmed that Extension is a career path I would seriously consider.
One of my favorite memories from the internship would have to be helping with 4-H State Competitive Events Day. After all the hard work that went into preparations, I saw that it was all worth it in the end. I was able to witness the youth being able to showcase their unique talents and be given opportunities to express themselves in a supportive environment. My biggest takeaway was realizing how impactful Extension work can be in shaping communities, especially by educating and supporting youth. For future interns, I would advise coming into the internship with an open mind and willingness to say yes to new experiences. Be engaged, ask questions, and take the initiative to learn. You will get out of the internship what you put into it!
