Thoughts from Anna
Preinternship
I chose to work with the Alabama Extension as an intern because it is a valuable resource for community members who may not have access to information about plants and healthy food choices. I have also considered working with Extension as a long-term career path, so this internship is giving me the opportunity to explore the various roles available within the organization. I find fulfillment in helping and educating others, and through Alabama Extension, I can consider this as a career. This experience aligns with my passion for community outreach and education. It also allows me to combine my interests in science and service in a meaningful way.
During this internship, I hope to build relationships with professionals in the industry, develop research skills, and gain a clearer understanding of what it’s like to work in Extension. On a personal level, I see room for growth in my communication skills and in building connections with people in the horticultural field. Professionally, I hope to learn how to conduct research effectively and make a meaningful impact on the community through the various programs Extension offers. I am excited to see what this internship will teach me and for the relationships I will gain.
Postinternship
I mentioned in my preinternship thoughts that I wanted to make connections and learn more about research. I have achieved these goals by attending events and meetings with my mentors and making connections with possibly future employers. I have also made so many positive relationships with Master Gardeners who have shared so much knowledge with me over the summer. I have learned more about research by helping with a cosmos trial, where I took data on cosmos that were planted at different times to see which planting date produced longer stems and bigger blooms for cut flowers.
My favorite memory is from the National Peach Ice Cream Day event I hosted at the Chilton County Extension office. So many people came out to support the office and learn to make ice cream. After the workshop, I had a social with leaders of the community. The firemen, policemen, and members of city hall came and enjoyed ice cream that I made. My biggest take away is the relationships that I was able to gain while meeting so many people that Extension touches. I would give future interns the advice to be vocal and talk to as many people as you can during the events, because you will make so many connections and learn so much from the people here!
