Alabama Extension Week is April 12-19. To celebrate, agents and specialists are offering twelve educational opportunities through the Alabama Extension Week Webinar Series. The presentations will cover agriculture, horticulture, natural resources, human sciences, and more. Because when it comes to providing outreach and education, Extension does that!

What to Plant Besides Crape Myrtles

Crape myrtles are a true Southern landscape tradition. They’re tough, flower through the worst of the summer heat, and come in sizes from shrubbery to shade trees. However, they’ve also been over-planted and are the most over-pruned tree in the state! Plus, sadly, we have a new crape myrtle pest, the crape myrtle bark scale. This sap feeding insect drains whole trees. It weakens them and causes their once shining bark to turn black. Reduced growth and flowering is followed by a lingering, unlovely death over a period of years. Learn what your other options are, whether you want to just plant something different from everyone else or are looking for ways to control crape myrtle bark scale.
