The Auburn Alumni Association’s Young Alumni Council named Landon Marks one of the 20 Under 40 Class of 2025. This honor is reserved for Auburn alumni who have made a significant contribution to their industry and who exemplify the principles of the Auburn Creed.
Marks is the Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s county director for Cherokee County. As a former animal science and forages agent, Marks worked with livestock producers in northeast Alabama to create a systems approach for growing forages and raising livestock in an efficient and sustainable way.
“I was truly surprised and honored to receive this recognition,” Marks said. “During my time with Alabama Extension, I’ve learned this work is all about service. It’s exciting to work on finding innovative ways to feed the world through education, research and on-farm demonstrations. It also has been a privilege to work with colleagues to develop 4-H livestock programs like Chick Chain and Pig Squeal. I know we are making a difference through Alabama Extension.”
Marks received his bachelor’s degree in animal sciences in 2010 from Auburn. As an undergrad, he worked at the Beef Teaching Unit and was an officer in the Block and Bridle Club and Meat Science Association. After earning a master’s degree in animal and dairy sciences from Mississippi State University, he returned to Auburn for his doctoral degree in animal sciences, which he received in 2020.
Alabama Extension Director Mike Phillips congratulated Marks on his inclusion in the 20 Under 40 Class of 2025.
“Alabama Extension is fortunate to have Landon on the team,” Phillips said. “He has an outstanding working knowledge of the Extension system and perseveres daily to support all facets of our work. Landon is very deserving of this recognition.”
Wesley Rogers, a former Alabama 4-H member, nominated Marks for the honor. The pair met when Rogers participated in the Alabama 4-H Chick Chain, and Marks continued mentoring Rogers through livestock judging, 4-H Quiz Bowl and Skillathon contests.
“Participating in 4-H activities led by Dr. Marks helped me decide to study animal sciences at Auburn University,” Rogers said. “I truly believe there is no one more deserving of this recognition than Dr. Marks. His contributions and commitment to Alabama Extension efforts are unparalleled. The time and effort he commits to 4-H, especially through animal sciences programming, has made an immeasurable impact on my own academic and professional careers as well as countless others. I am happy to see Dr. Marks receive this well-deserved recognition and know that he will continue to make a lasting impact on everyone around him.”
Marks and his wife, Lauren, own and operate Marks Animal Hospital and Mountain View Cattle Farm in Leesburg, Alabama.
