The Barbour County 4-H forestry team represented Alabama at the 44th National 4-H Forestry Invitational held July 20-23, placing fifth out of 12 teams. Team members include Evan Fant, Hunter McGilvary and Taylor Stevens, who was the eighth highest overall scoring individual. Stevens also tied for the highest individual score in the forest health portion of the contest. The team was coached by Jill Wachs and Audria McGilvary.
The invitational was held at West Virginia University Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston, West Virginia. As a part of the competition, 4-H members compete in several categories. Events include tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic-map use, forest evaluation, forestry bowl and a written forestry exam.
