 Juana Macias Christian

When Juana Macías-Christian left her native Honduras to attend Alabama A&M University (AAMU) on a full scholarship, she didn’t know what lay ahead. She did not know that the relationships she formed and the opportunities she embraced would lead to a career dedicated to transforming lives across Alabama. Today, more than 24 years after joining the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (Alabama Extension), Juana continues to serve as a trusted educator, advocate, and connector for residents of DeKalb and Marshall Counties, particularly within the Hispanic community.

Her journey reflects the very values Extension seeks to promote: education, service, and community engagement. After earning her undergraduate degree from AAMU, Juana returned to Honduras, where she discovered a passion for teaching and community outreach. Seeing how education can improve lives inspired her to keep learning. She later returned to AAMU to earn a master’s degree in family and consumer sciences, a decision that ultimately opened the door to a career in Alabama Extension.

In the Field

As an urban regional Extension agent, Juana works across community economic development, human nutrition, diet and health, and food safety programming. Yet her work extends far beyond programs and workshops. For more than two decades, she has built relationships that have strengthened trust between Alabama Extension and often underserved, overlooked communities.

“The driving force has always been the people,” Juana explains.

Whether working with students, parents, teachers, business owners, seniors, or community partners, she has remained motivated by the opportunity to help others solve problems, achieve goals, and improve their quality of life. Her ability to connect with people across cultures and languages has made her an invaluable resource in the communities she serves.

One of Juana’s greatest contributions has been creating pathways to opportunity. Through educational programs delivered in both English and Spanish, she has helped individuals and families access information, resources, and support that can positively shape their futures. Her work demonstrates that Extension is more than education. It is about empowerment, trust, and helping people recognize their potential.

Transforming Lives

Among the many success stories from her career, one stands out as a reminder of why Extension matters. A high school sophomore participated in the Career Countdown program through the TRIO Summer Program while uncertain about his future. Through career exploration assessments and activities, he discovered a passion for culinary arts. Motivated by what he learned, he pursued culinary school and successfully completed his training.

Years later, he shared a message that left a lasting impression on Juana.

“Without Career Countdown, I would have never applied to culinary school. I probably would have just worked at a fast-food restaurant.”

For Juana, that conversation reinforced an important truth: sometimes one program, one opportunity, or one encouraging voice can completely alter the direction of a person’s life. Her career is filled with stories like this—people who discovered new possibilities because someone took the time to guide them toward their potential.

Building Lasting Impacts

When asked what advice she would offer the next generation of Extension professionals, Juana’s response is simple: Adapt. She believes Alabama Extension’s strength lies in its ability to evolve alongside the communities it serves. As technology advances and community needs change, successful professionals must stay flexible, remain open to learning, and commit to finding new ways to connect with people. That philosophy has sustained her through 24 years of service and continues to shape her work today.

Juana’s legacy cannot be measured solely by the programs she has delivered or the years she has served. It shows in the students who found their calling, the families who gained access to important resources, the businesses that received support, and the communities that have come to trust Alabama Extension as a reliable partner. Her story is a testament to the power of education, service, and perseverance.
