Austin Blankenship, Alabama 4-H Extension agent in Lawrence County, won the Young Farmers Excellence in Agriculture contest. The contest was held during the Alabama Farmers Federation annual Farm and Land Conference in Mobile, Ala.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” Blankenship said. “While it bears my name, it represents far more than one person’s efforts. It reflects the mission of Alabama Extension and the collective support of family, friends, mentors, ALFA members and the communities I have the privilege to serve.”
The Excellence in Agriculture Competition allows participants to showcase agriculture’s role in their lives and present solutions to major industry hurdles. Blankenship focused on strengthening agricultural education at the state level to address the decline in agricultural literacy among young people. His proposed solution was not a single program but a long-term commitment to expanding agricultural literacy through youth development, teacher support, community partnerships and advocacy.
“I believe an agriculturally informed public is one of the most important investments we can make in the future of agriculture,” Blankenship said.
Blankenship shared how he uses 4-H clubs and projects, industry tours and classroom demonstrations to help young people better understand agriculture and the career opportunities available. He discussed partnering with schools to secure grants that support outdoor classroom and experimental learning spaces, allowing students to learn through real-world agricultural experiences.
Blankenship will go on to compete nationally at the American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention in Charlotte, N.C.
