The following are key points for participants to know when starting their home garden variety trials:
Plant both varieties. Each trial compares two varieties, so plant both of them.
Treat both varieties the same to ensure a fair comparison. They should receive the same amount of sunlight, water, fertilizer, and general care.
- Use your normal gardening practices. If you normally fertilize with organic fertilizer, continue to do that. If you typically grow plants in containers, plant both varieties in containers.
- Plant comparison varieties near each other to ensure they receive similar conditions. For vining crops, keep each variety contained, so they don’t tangle during harvest.
Grow what you can. In these trials, you are given enough seeds to plant about 10 feet of each variety. If space is limited, plant the seeds that you have space for, keeping the amounts of both varieties equal.
Label your planted varieties. Also, create a plot diagram in case your markers get moved.
Fill out the evaluations. The online evaluation form will ask certain questions, such as which variety germinated best, had healthier plants, produce higher yields, etc.
